Resources: Configuration Management
Setting up the control and flow of documents at this stage is important. From a resources perpective having a savvy Configuration and Document Control person on board to strategize and implement these major functions will pay off in dividends down the road. While there are many tasks for this person to focus on, having a Part Numbering scheme or system in place is critical since just about all documents generated need some type of marking. Once this is in place, then you will need a controlling mechanism to modify these documents so that the right drawings get to the right person at the right time. I will discuss these processes in more detail in the PROCESSES section.

This also pertains directly to the control and release of software as well.
This person should have good skills with spreadsheets and databases as well MRP/ERP systems. This person should also understand when should a new part number be created versus changing a revision of a drawing of BOM (bill-of-material). Use of Excel in the short term for BOM management is a good way to go. Most contract manufacturers also like Excel BOMs as they allow for importation into their respective MRP/ERP system. I will discuss BOMs more in depth in the DOCUMENTATION section.
