What kinds of documentation do I need to consider?
Documentation and Processes go hand in hand as all processes need to be documented and revision controlled. This can be in many forms, from a BOM to a fabrication drawing or from a part specification to a gerber file to even a user or service manual. Documentation forms the solid foundation for eventual mass production of your product and beyond. Whether you outsource or manufacture internally, anyone who is even remotely involved in this process needs information on what to do, when to do it, where to do it, how to do it and sometimes on why to do it. Here are just a few of the documents that may be required:- BOM (Bill-of-Material)
- Fabrication Drawing
- Assembly Drawing
- ECO (Engineering Change Order)
- Schematics
- AVL/AML (Approved Vendor List or Approved Manufacturer List)
- Component Specifications
- Assembly Instructions
- Packaging Instructions
- Part Number System
- User Manual
- Artwork and/or Gerber File
- SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures)
- Quality Workmanship Standards
This list does go on and you will need to add documents as your company grows. Processes that are documented control how your company operates and are necessary if you strive to become ISO (International Organization for Standardization) compliant someday. Laying the foundation now will only help you achieve your future goals.
I will focus on just some of the critical pieces of documentation that you should consider implementing and using:
